While working as a reporter at Downtown Sundevils, I had the chance to cover QuiltCon 2022 at the Phoenix Convention Center.
This event, a five-day convention for quilting enthusiasts, featured a wide range of exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and a contest with participants from around the world. The article highlighted prominent figures in the quilting community, such as Latifah Saafir and Roderick Kiracofe, and explored the evolving nature of quilting, with a special focus on how younger generations are embracing the craft through social media and online communities.
I conducted interviews with attendees, vendors, and participants to capture the diversity of the quilting community, sharing personal stories and insights that underscored quilting’s deep roots and its ongoing cultural relevance.
The event, which returned in person after the pandemic, was a blend of tradition and innovation, and I was able to showcase how the quilting community has adapted in response to the pandemic and emerging trends.
My writing illustrated the unifying power of quilting, not only as a craft but as a vehicle for connection, education, and expression, across various age groups and backgrounds.
